Our client, a Consumer Products Company, is seeking a freelance Copy Editor to join the Worldwide Publishing team team.

You will report to the Copy Chief and be responsible for:

  • Copyedits short manuscripts such as picture books, established series chapter books, short stories, and longer manuscripts such as middle grade and young adult novels to ensure sense, continuity, quality of grammar, spelling, and style, and accuracy and consistency of text and art.

  • Create style sheets for series and longer books.

  • Perform proofreading at all book stages to check that changes and corrections have been executed as requested.

  • Identifies and communicates bookmaking problems and further corrections needed.

  • Reviews jackets, covers, and promotional materials, and product packaging as assigned.

  • Checks prices, bar codes, and other specifications against company database.

Musts:

  • BA/BS
  • 2-5 years experience in working with long-form content, ideally targeting the preschool to teenage audience
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills, including editing with electronic tools such as Microsoft Word Track Changes and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to function under pressure of tight deadlines and to juggle multiple projects with flexibility as to specific needs.
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition and comfort working with a house style and individual franchise guidelines and nomenclature.
  • College-level understanding of literature, grammar, style, and spelling.
  • Book publishing copyediting experience preferred; affinity for children’s books and/or kids properties highly desirable.
  • Style guide will be provided but must be familiar and accustomed to working with and consulting a style guide
