Onward Search is looking for a Digital Content Strategist to join our State of Georgia client in downtown Atlanta for a long-term onsite contract opportunity!

Please Note: Prior experience managing and developing content in Drupal 7 or 8 is REQUIRED for this position.

Job Summary:

  • You will help support ongoing initiatives to replatform on Drupal 8 and migrate existing websites to digital platform with better defined content structures
  • You will partner with multiple state agencies to ensure all websites follow best content practices by hosting on the state’s enterprise digital platform
  • You will need to understand the business needs, map them to the end-user needs and work with agencies to create a content strategy for individual websites
  • You will refine and advance our editorial vision and mission and help plan, produce, and analyze written content
  • You will help build our editorial calendar and written guidelines as well as determine sources for content both internally and externally
  • You will create a network of state agency communication personnel and go-to influencers within the state, coordinate content, and show a strategic vision for our digital presence
  • You have experience in Drupal and a passion for writing, content strategy, and promoting content on social media
  • You are a resident content expert that can drive outreach efforts by creating content for existing client channels
  • You will need to be acquainted with web publishing best practices, accessibility, and social media
  • You should keep yourself updated with industry trends and best practices and translate that to how we as a state can lead by example within the realm of web solutions
  • You are a team player and enjoy working closely with others to report, research, and explore solutions to challenges

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Act as a liaison between the organization and multiple external clients
  • Be an active participant in planning and conducting content migrations for websites migrated from legacy system to the new digital platform
  • Collaborate with identified agencies to create a content strategy and playbook the agency content managers can follow
  • Conduct training for organization content managers using content training materials and framework
  • Determine and manage sources for content creation, both internally and externally
  • Serve as an exemplary writer, consistent with organization tone and mission
  • Write clean, concise, well-polished content that includes factual pieces, articles, blogs, and social media updates
  • Edit and proofread content produced by teammates, including conceptualizing the projects upfront and copy-editing prior to publishing
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends, content performance metrics, and customer challenges in order to build a more effective editorial calendar
  • Manage content and social media presence for the organization website
  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary vendor teams to evaluate ongoing content enhancements in the face of technical constraints
  • Participate in customer requirements gathering and discovery meetings
  • Support the acquisition team in presenting content strategy to stakeholders and executive leadership and gain buy-in on proposed approach

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience of content strategy and management preferably in either government, public sector, or nonprofit organizations
  • Knowledge of web-based content management systems, specifically experience with Drupal 7 and 8.
  • Self-motivated with a proven track record in customer requirements gathering and documentation.
  • Organized and analytical, adept at working in a team environment, able to implement a project schedule, and able to handle multiple priorities in a fast moving environment
  • Knowledge of industry best practices in writing for the web
  • Proven experience in plain language writing
  • Proven experience participating in large projects with cross functional content, design, and development teams
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Ability to create content models and work with design and development teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong team player with significant collaborative work experience
  • Familiarity with Agile (Scrum) project methodologies
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills including the ability to present content concepts clearly and persuasively to colleagues, partners, stakeholders, and especially to senior executives
  • Familiarity with Social Media platforms and developing and managing content across social channels
  • Familiarity with JIRA or similar product management tools preferred
  • Experience conducting field studies preferred
  • Understanding of common software project management and development practices strongly preferred
  • A portfolio demonstrating your ability to research, write, and strategize content is required and should be submitted at time of application


  • The client is unable to support 1099 / Corp-to-Corp or Independent Contractor arrangements at this time. All freelancers will be paid as W2 employees.
