Onward Search is looking for a Proofreader for one of our Fortune 500 clients. The proofreader will be responsible for reading content for grammar, style and brand, and for validating the accuracy and completeness of changes and content to all documentation produced.

Day to Day:

  • Proofread typeset layouts, website pages, Keynotes/PowerPoints, interactive multimedia and other formats
  • Mark up copy using traditional proofreading symbols to indicate corrections and questions for typesetters, programmers, project managers and clients
  • Read typeset copy against client-supplied manuscript to ensure that the first setting is complete and accurate
  • Perform cold reads to correct for spelling, grammar, punctuation and stylistic consistency
  • If available, apply client’s editorial style
  • Proofread edits to ensure that all approved corrections / changes have been made
  • Read website pages against final copy to ensure site content is complete and accurate
  • Check typeset pages for design and type consistency, alignments, headers/footers, Table of Contents, pagination/folios, color accuracy, cover and spine copy, etc.
  • Handle a high volume of work with pressing deadlines on a daily basis
  • Fact-check information and raise flags about questionable/inconsistent information
  • Document client editorial style


  • Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of ownership of one’s work
  • Track record of excellent proofreading work
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Command of American English spelling, grammar and punctuation rules and norms
  • Command of the Chicago Manual of Style ; knowledge of AP style a plus
  • Working knowledge of editorial style guides and style sheets in general
  • Working knowledge of design specifications (i.e., spacing/picas, alignment, pt. size and weight, color, shading, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate information effectively with team members while also working independently
  • Good verbal communication skills: able to speak clearly; to listen and obtain clarification; and to respond to questions
  • Ability to write legibly and informatively; and to read and interpret handwritten comments, including client markup
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Objectivity and openness to others’ views
  • Supportive of everyone’s efforts to succeed
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures
  • Excellent organizational skills and common sense
  • MS Office and Adobe Acrobat
